[2]Known until 1989 as the Eastern Townships Historical Society, the Musée d'histoire de Sherbrooke retains its original mission, which is to preserve local heritage and promote the history of Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships in general. The way the territory of the Eastern Townships was divided, occupied, and transformed remains the Society's primary interest. Since 1992, the Society has occupied part of Sherbrooke's historic former Post Office building (1885), where it manages a Museum and Archives. The mission of the Archives is to collect and conserve archival collections, complete these holdings, and make them accessible to researchers; to initiate and encourage research in regional history; to interpret and publicize the results of that research; and to collaborate with other organizations.
