The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is now presenting the exhibition Passages by artist Lisa Tognon. This exhibition, produced and circulated by the Maison des arts de Laval, will be on display until 10 June. The opening vernissage takes place on Saturday 31 March, at 5:00 p.m.

The exhibition: René Viau, curator of the exhibition, writes: “The title of the exhibition underlines the different ‘passages’ to be observed in the work of this artist. To start with it might be simply changes in brushstrokes and colours or different techniques on paper. But beyond her tendency to use multiple techniques and a variety of media, the works of Lisa Tognon always return to unusual relationships, to new ‘passages’. The sensitivity shown by the artist requires us to be open and available to all of the suggestions that animate her work.” With the untouched paper as a constant – the white becoming an integral part of the composition –, the work of Lisa Tognon invites us to a real immersion in the world of light and colour. To create these pieces, Lisa Tognon may simultaneously use drawing, painting, or single-copy engraving, embellishments of ink or acrylic, and inlay. With these techniques, she introduces a rich visual context.

In her work, the artist refers to great natural phenomena as well as to the primal elements: fire, as in the series Materia Prima which contains traces of combustion; water in Faire Surface, air and earth. Following an “entrée en matière”, where a matrix of masonite is cut by jig-saw to create a an embossing effect on certain pieces, the works are arranged by differentiated “zones”. Thus the exhibition is organized around several series, each with its own character: Atlandide (2002), Dénouement (2006), Materia Prima (2008), Sans mot dire (2008-2009), En certains moments blancs (2009), Faire Surface (2010). The artist will create an original installation using floating papers and her recycled copper engraving plates. In all, about 60 works by Lisa Tognon are on view.

The artist: Lisa Tognon works skillfully in various techniques: drawing, engraving, printmaking, and painting. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in arts plastiques with a major in engraving from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She lives in Laval, and works from her studio in Montréal. In 1998, Lisa Tognon won the Loto-Québec competition in printmaking and received the Prix d’excellence de la Biennale L’Art et le Papier II, from the Galerie d’art Jean-Claude-Bergeron. The same year she was recipient of the Prix Jacques-Cartier des Arts, awarded by the City of Lyons at the Biennale internationale d’estampes miniatures. Works by Lisa Tognon are found in many public and private collections. In 2012, she will also present an exhibition in Cuba.
