medium_copps.jpgLe premier traversier commercial sur le lac Memphrémagog, "Copp's Ferry", et certainement l'un des premiers dans les Cantons-de-l'Est, appartenait à Moses Copp et mouillait sur les berges du village au nom très approprié de Copp's Ferry (devenu Georgeville).

Vers 1797, peu après son arrivée dans la région, M. Copp fit construire un bac à rames qui reliait les rives est et ouest du lac. En 1829, Joshua, le fils de M. Copp, et quelques associés commencèrent à exploiter un bateau à cheval qu'ils nommèrent "Ho-Boy". Ils faisaient traverser des passagers, du bétail, des marchandises et probablement des diligences de l'autre côté du lac. Un tandem de chevaux était attaché à un mécanisme qui actionnait une roue à aubes et faisait avancer le bateau. Le traversier à cheval accostait à Potton Landing (devenu Knowlton's Landing) et représentait une liaison importante pour les diligences qui voyageaient entre Stanstead, Georgeville et Montréal.
